This is an important commercial centre and a seaside resort with a port. This city consists of a historical quarter and a modern coastline development. It is famous for Coral handicrafts and its coastline is called Riviera di Corallo. In Alghero there is the Gothic -Catalan Cathedral from the XVI century inside which there are valuable works of art, the church of San Francesco from 1300 which was modified in the XVIII century, the Spanish towers and bastions. In the Civic Library there are interesting rare Catalan books. From the Aragonese city walls some towers are left. Among these there are the towers of Porta Terra, Maddalena and Sperone (circular layout from the sixteenth century). It is worth visiting the surrounding area to see the Nettuno Cave and Escala del Cabirol, Capo Caccia, the Necropolis of Anghelo Ruju and Santu Pedru and to the Nuragic village of Palmavera. Nearby there is the the Lido of Fertilia with its airport. Porto Conte bay is an ideal place for diving.
